Members of the Eugene Sustainability Commission’s planning committee set a June 17 date for a business-panel event and began firming up invitees, question themes and outreach deadlines.
"The main goal of the meeting today is to figure out the business panel," a committee member said, opening a discussion that focused on which local businesses could offer practical perspectives for the commission.
The committee identified a mix of potential panelists to represent several local sectors: food manufacturers and small grocers, breweries and restaurants, refrigeration services and forest-products companies. Suggestions named during the meeting included Blue Lotus Chai, Rosen Aviation, Brock Refrigeration, Sierra Pacific/Roseburg Forest Products, Drop Bear (a brewery/restaurant) and Johnny Oceans (restaurant). Participants emphasized a mix of businesses that are already active on sustainability and those that can speak to barriers to compliance.
Why it matters: the panel is intended to help the commission shape local sustainability goals and benchmarks that are achievable across different business types. One committee member summarized a recurring theme: "The city should set goals and benchmarks, but don't prescribe how a business should get there," arguing that flexible approaches and incentives may be more effective than one-size-fits-all mandates.
The group sketched a format and timeline: staff will draft roughly nine to ten candidate questions and provide them to panelists in advance, ask each panelist to select a subset to answer live, and use facilitators to keep responses concise. Proposed question themes include: what sustainability metrics matter to your organization; where businesses get stuck when implementing sustainability initiatives; how incentives or technical assistance could help; and how environmental trends (wildfire, fuel costs) are affecting operations.
Logistics and next steps agreed during the meeting include holding the panel in the atrium at 5:30 p.m. on June 17, asking invited businesses to respond by May 22, and refining the question list at the committee’s June 3 meeting. One committee member said staff would reach out to Courtney (a commissioner contact) and copy Devin on outreach.
No formal vote was recorded; the session ended with the committee agreeing to proceed with outreach and to return with a finalized question set at the next meeting.
