Council approves land-development updates to increase housing density and ADUs

On April 13 the Bangor City Council voted 9-0 to adopt ordinance 26-118, a set of updates to the city's land development code intended to comply with several state laws (cited in the meeting as L.D. 1829, L.D. 427 and L.D. 997).
Councilor Falloon said the changes increase residential density allowances in urban zones, permit more accessory dwelling units on additional lots, allow additional height and parking flexibility for affordable housing projects, and clarify wastewater and water requirements for new housing. The planning board reviewed and unanimously recommended the changes at its April 7 meeting.
Councilors praised planning staff and the planning board for the work required to implement state-mandated changes. The ordinance passed by unanimous roll-call vote 9-0.
Next steps: staff will implement the code updates and pursue any additional zone changes slated for later amendments to comply with state law.
