Porter County commissioners approved a standard operating procedure March 10 to make the towns of Chesterton and Porter subject to county 911 call-handling and initial dispatch procedures, with an activation date of April 1.
Debbie, the county 911 presenter, told commissioners the change brings Chesterton and Porter into the same call flow that already serves other police departments in Porter County. She said that under current practice Chesterton and Porter calls are transferred after initial triage, which creates redundant information-gathering and delays. "This will eliminate that aspect," she said, describing how the county will directly enter calls into the CAD and dispatch resources when appropriate.
Commissioners discussed legislative compliance and the operational benefits; they approved the SOP by voice vote and set the activation for April 1 to allow coordination with the towns. Debbie and staff said they will meet with Chesterton and Porter officials to finalize operational details and to credential any local personnel who will access CAD or PulsePoint features.
The vote formalizes a technical and procedural change in call-handling that county officials say will reduce response delays and standardize dispatch procedures countywide.
