Boerne City Council on May 12 approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to execute an amendment to the city’s agreement with Friese and Nichols, Inc. for additional engineering services on the Adler Road drainage and road‑widening projects.
City Engineer Abigail Knott told council the amendment covers added design and construction‑phase support required after the project encountered historic and environmental permitting delays, an unanticipated well and communication‑line coordination needs. She cited roughly $130,000 in additional fees for culvert/low‑water crossing work and approximately $1,360,000 for roadway design additions, and said about $229,000 is expected for extra right‑of‑way acquisition effort.
“By incorporating lessons learned from the culvert project, we want to be ahead of the game on the larger roadway project so construction proceeds smoothly,” Knott said.
Council discussed the cost increases and confirmed that some additional fees are tied to right‑of‑way and permitting issues rather than construction overruns. A motion to approve the contract amendment passed on a 5–0 vote.
Next steps: Knott said project design will continue through 2027 with construction anticipated to begin thereafter subject to design completion and right‑of‑way acquisition, and staff will return to council with schedule and budget details as the design advances.
