The House of Representatives convened a special session on May 14, 2026, titled “Legado de Amor,” to honor mothers across Puerto Rico. The session opened with an invocation and reading of Proverbs 31 by Pastor Josué Carrillo, followed by a longer personal message from Pastor Sixto Porras in which he framed motherhood as transforming hardship into a lasting legacy.
Portavoz Torres Zamora read a roll of invited mayors, civic leaders and honorees from municipalities including Vega Alta and Yauco and presented a formal motion to express the chamber’s congratulations to mothers; the motion cited Ley número 25 del 11 de marzo del 1915, which established the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day in Puerto Rico. The body authorized photo and video documentation for the event while prohibiting interviews on the hemicycle floor.
Representatives from multiple delegations delivered tributes. Lizy Burgos (Proyecto Dignidad) highlighted the life story of Derilín Serrano Bernazet, noting her resilience in raising children amid health and financial challenges. The Partido Independentista delegation honored former athletes and activists, naming María Judith Ruiz Ramos and Sonia Santiago Hernández among the guests. The Partido Popular Democrático delegation offered a broad tribute to mothers across districts and to mothers of children with special needs.
Wanda del Valle, president of the House Commission on Women, and several other legislators recounted local examples of long-serving community mothers present in the gallery. The presiding officer closed the ceremonial portion, arranged a photo opportunity at the presidential dais, and recessed the chamber until 2:00 p.m.
The session’s ceremonial remarks were transcribed at the request of Representative Aponte Hernández and ordered distributed to members. No formal policy decisions were taken during the Mother’s Day segment; the assembly then shifted to its regular legislative calendar after the recess.
