City Council honors USS Cleveland and presents proclamation to crew

Council President Griffin said the ceremony marks “a moment of profound civic pride” as the new littoral combat ship carries the city’s name. Councilman Mike Pencic, who joined the president for the presentation, told the chamber he toured the vessel and urged residents to visit the ship while it is docked on the lakefront. “When you see all of the sailors … from different walks of life,” Pencic said, “it only reinforces that the United States Navy truly represents the best of our nation.”
Machinistmate Chief Segwood Miller accepted the proclamation on behalf of the crew and thanked the council for the recognition. Tim Daly of the USS Cleveland Foundation and his wife were also acknowledged for their role in bringing the ship to Cleveland.
The proclamation notes the ship was christened on April 15, 2023, and stated the vessel will be manned by “approximately 90 sailors and officers” as it enters service. Council members pledged support to sailors and their families and invited the public to participate in commissioning events.
The presentation concluded with applause and photo opportunities; no council action was required for the proclamation.
