San Carlos — The San Mateo County Transportation Authority told the City Council on May 11 it will launch a multi‑year mini‑grant program to speed planning and community engagement for projects identified in its 101 Corridor Connect and Active 101 planning effort.
Patrick Gilster, SMCTA director of planning and fund management, said the board set aside $4 million from discretionary interest earnings for technical assistance and early‑stage funding—enough to fund conceptual design, corridor studies and community outreach (up to roughly $750,000 per project with no local match required). Applications are expected in late June with decisions in August.
Key local projects already identified for San Carlos include corridor and safety work around Old County Road, Holly Street, El Camino Real, the Holly/101 interchange and a planned Holly Street pedestrian/bicycle overcrossing. SMCTA said the mini grants are intended to turn projects on county priority lists into fundable applications for state and federal programs.
SMCTA also said it will fund community‑based organization participation in project outreach and encouraged cities to designate council champions and staff sitewalks for proposed projects.
What to expect: Staff said it will coordinate with SMCTA on project ideas for San Carlos and consider applying for conceptual design funding for a shortlisted local priority.
