LaSalle County VAC hires new VSO, reports $3.4M in benefits and asks full board to approve higher five‑year lease

Christa, speaking for the Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC), updated the Nursing Home & VAC committee May 11 on staffing, outreach and facilities.
The VAC is preparing for an expo Friday 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the local airport, has produced a quarterly newsletter, and recently toured the National Personnel Records Center to improve veterans’ records assistance. Staff additions include a new Veterans Service Officer, Jordan, who started April 13 and will pursue accreditation in June.
Christa reported the VAC has brought in just over $3.4 million in new veteran benefits year‑to‑date and is about $107,000 ahead of the same point last year. The commission is planning a fifth‑year open‑house event in Peru later in the year.
Under new business Christa presented a proposed five‑year lease renewal with building owner Dr. Garg that would increase rent from $4,200 to $5,000 per month beginning Aug. 1. The commission’s attorney reviewed the document; Christa asked the committee for support to send the lease to the full board for formal signature in the county’s name (state law restricts ownership). Committee member Kathy Owens moved to forward the lease and Matt Slagger seconded; the committee approved the request by voice vote and it will proceed to the full board for final action.
The committee also approved VAC bills and accepted Christa’s report by voice vote.
