Galena council approves liquor licenses, advances ordinance renaming Class E license

At its May 11 meeting, the Galena City Council approved a set of routine items including liquor‑license applications, a first reading of an ordinance to rename an alcohol license category, a motor fuel tax maintenance resolution, and personnel appointments.

The council (sitting temporarily as the Electric Commission) approved an application for a Class K corporate liquor license for Midnight Gem LLC (500 W Indigo Lane), listing Alex Nelson as the owner. The body also approved a Class K manager license naming Tyler Blazy as manager of the Midnight Gem. The commission noted the location had previously held a liquor license under different ownership.

Back in city‑council session, members approved the consent agenda (CA26‑09) after staff clarified a trade‑in value on a new police squad car purchase and explained a planned master services agreement with Dixon for engineering task orders. The council approved a resolution under the motor fuel tax program to authorize street and highway maintenance and voted to approve appointments of employees for the May 11, 2026–May 10, 2027 period.

On new business the council approved the first reading and voted to waive the second reading of an ordinance amending Chapter 111 (Alcoholic Beverages) to rename the Class E license as a special‑event license (item 26C‑0203). Council members approved the motor fuel tax resolution (26C‑0204) and the warrants for payment after staff explained remaining invoices tied to the existing Axon camera contract.

Before adjourning to an executive session, the mayor and council offered routine recognitions and scheduling updates, including the pool opening May 27 and a film‑shoot request for May 22–23 that will not require street closures.
