Galena council approves $10,000 for Fourth of July fireworks after split on funding

The Galena City Council voted May 11 to provide $10,000 to a local service organization for Fourth of July event activities after a divided discussion over precedent and where the money should come from.

Councilmembers debated competing proposals during unfinished business on agenda item 26C-0180. An initial motion to fund $6,500 failed for lack of a second. A subsequent motion to provide $10,000 was made and seconded and carried on a roll-call vote, five in favor and one opposed.

Supporters said the event is a longstanding community service and argued a larger contribution this year was justified by Galena’s bicentennial celebrations and the economic activity the event brings. One councilmember who supported the $10,000 motion said the city would recover some revenue from increased visitor spending and that the organization has historically run the event by donations.

Opponents and cautious members raised concerns about setting a precedent for future special-event funding and suggested alternative sources such as Visit Galena’s hotel‑motel tax revenue or county contributions. A councilmember proposed splitting the difference at $8,500 to cover only documented cost increases, but the assembly ultimately approved the $10,000 request.

Councilmembers also discussed operational details: fireworks cost estimates had risen from about $11,000 to as high as $13,000 this year, and at least one member emphasized that cleanup after the display should be included in the agreement if the city provided additional funding.

The motion was recorded as passed by roll call (5–1). The council did not specify additional contract terms on the record; staff will handle follow-up implementation steps.

The council moved on to other business after the vote.
