Chuck, the Pinelands Commission's regulatory programs director, announced on May 8 that he will retire effective June 1 after nearly 40 years of service. In a five-minute statement, he recounted his start at the Commission in 1986, reflected on the agency's mission and urged a future Commission discussion about priorities and enforcement authority.
Chuck praised regulatory program staff for handling a wide range of duties, from wildlife and environmental review to zoning interpretation and public communications. "They have to be wildlife biologists, zoning reviewers, public-relations experts and writers," he said, thanking staff for their work.
Following his remarks, multiple commissioners and long-time colleagues offered tributes, highlighting his institutional memory, communication skills and patience with the public and applicants. Commissioners moved to memorialize the remarks in a formal resolution; a motion and second were recorded and the Commission indicated support (transcript does not provide a numerical roll-call tally). Several commissioners noted they would work to preserve Chuck's institutional knowledge and to address the future role and priorities of the Commission.
The Commission also recognized recent staff hires, an upcoming summer intern, and ongoing modernization and permitting-efficiency efforts in other parts of the meeting. Chuck's final day will be June 1; staff and commissioners said they will draft a resolution to memorialize his service.
