Canopy Bloomington reports 1,400 volunteer hours and fast spring plantings

Canopy Bloomington executive director Eva Hartman presented the nonprofit nnual activity report during the May 6 council meeting. Hartman said Canopy recorded 1,400 volunteer hours in 2025 and 300 active volunteers, worked with five neighborhoods and reached about 1,500 households with outreach. The group reported planting 256 trees in 2025 and 248 trees so far this spring, and said it expects to increase fall planting activity.
Hartman described partnerships with five neighborhoods, seven different planting locations, five schools and multiple nonprofit partners. She highlighted the group—hildren nd youth programming (Youth Tree Tender) in parks and school-based education and said most plantings were private-property installations coupled with homeowner education. Council members thanked Canopy and asked about volunteer recruitment and whether the city's volunteer-hour initiative had influenced their pipeline; Hartman said IU student groups are a consistent source of volunteers and noted Canopy does not always track volunteer recruitment channels.
Hartman asked for continued council support in outreach and partnership; council members and several residents applauded the organization nd noted the tree plantings as a visible public-benefit match with city programs.
