Board reviews MASB self-assessment; trustees flag data-driven decision-making and scorecard work

Trustees reviewed a Michigan Association of School Boards self-assessment that rated board–superintendent relations highest (4.83) and data-driven decision-making lowest (3.95). The Milan Area Schools Board of Education reviewed results from the MASB online self-assessment, discussed strengths and identified areas for improvement, and outlined next steps to align district goals and data.
Superintendent McMahon and board members summarized category scores: leadership (4.76), academic performance and accountability (4.14), board responsibilities (4.52), board effectiveness (4.76), data-driven decision-making (3.95), board–superintendent relations (4.83), and community relations and advocacy (4.42). Trustees welcomed the exercise and noted the board performs well in leadership and superintendent relations.
Several trustees suggested the board revisit and revise the district scorecard so measures align with district goals and to allow more time at meetings for trustees to review and digest data. Trustee Sislo and others urged combining work on data-driven decision-making with scorecard revisions, and Trustee Pharaoh recommended discussing the scorecard again during the superintendent's midyear review, to be held in closed session at the next meeting.
Trustees also discussed transparency and proactively sharing key metrics with families. The board agreed to continue the exercise and to follow up with staff to identify which data and reporting formats would best inform future decisions.
