The board directed staff to refine the June budget to ensure the district enters the year with a balanced plan while accommodating the higher COLA.
District presentations at the meeting noted that recent state action funded teacher pay through the teacher retention allotment but does not supply ongoing COLA funding. Trustees discussed trade-offs between one-time allocations and recurring annual expenses and asked staff to review nonrecurring funds ahead of the June budget workshop.
The amended motion to set the COLA at 3% passed on a 7–0 vote. Board members said the action was meant to support staff pay stability while allowing time for budget adjustments before the fiscal year begins.
