The Simsbury Open Space Committee reported multiple upcoming invasive-plant outreach and removal efforts and asked the committee to consider underwriting a reprint of a popular invasive-plant booklet.
At the May 6 meeting, the committee said the May 2 Sustainability Fair produced strong public interest and volunteer leads; several volunteer removal dates are scheduled, including a May 23 collaborative removal with the Farmington River Watershed Association to address porcelain berry along Sycamore.
“We gave out a lot of … the invasive plant booklet. We are running out of them,” a committee member said, and the group discussed splitting the cost of a reprint between the Simsbury Land Trust and the town open-space budget.
Members said volunteer removal dates and education events are listed on the Simsbury Land Trust website and encouraged committee volunteers to participate. The committee also noted related public events: a native-plant talk at the Canton Grange, a wildflower walk at the nature center, and the Simsbury Land Trust 50th annual dinner on June 4 at Rosedale.
Next steps: the committee will coordinate logistics for removal dates, confirm locations (including town forest trails and adjacent properties), and identify budget support for outreach materials.
