Lafayette approves $135,000 amendment with West Lafayette for emergency vehicle preemption project

City Engineer Jeremy Grenard told the Lafayette City Council that Amendment No. 2 to the memorandum of understanding with West Lafayette will cover an additional $135,000 match for the emergency vehicle preemption project, which is funded through the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). Grenard recommended the amendment and the council approved it by voice vote.
Grenard said West Lafayette’s bids for their portion came in higher than expected, in part because of added scope, and that the amendment clarifies which jurisdiction will cover the extra match. He told the council that Lafayette has not yet put its side of the project out to bid and that its bidding is scheduled for later this fall.
The change preserves the HSIP funding structure, under which federal safety funds cover the majority of eligible costs with local matching dollars. Grenard said the amendment also addresses deployment and maintenance responsibilities for the preemption equipment. The council approved the motion with no recorded dissents.
Next steps: staff will finalize Lafayette’s procurement for its portion of the project later this year and return with implementation details and any budget amendments if required.
