Emma Brown was elected chair of the Cape Coral Youth Council at the May 8 meeting, receiving 13 votes to none, and will lead the council for the 2026–27 term.
The council’s election followed nominations and brief statements from candidates. Emma Brown, a senior at Oasis High School who said she served as the council’s vice chair last year, told members she would “bring dedication, responsibility and leadership” to the role if elected. The body then voted; Member Sanchez moved to appoint Brown and Member Jackson seconded the motion, which the chair announced as carried.
Members also selected a vice chair. After nominations and a tally of ballots, the council appointed Member Amir Habash as vice chair; the announcement recorded nine votes for Habash, four votes for another candidate and zero for a third. The new officers will assume responsibilities immediately, with Brown presiding over future meeting agendas and Habash serving as vice chair and attendance recorder as required.
Why it matters: The annual officer election sets the council’s leadership for the coming year and determines who will represent the Youth Council at events and in communications with City staff and elected officials. Chair Brown and Vice Chair Habash will oversee the council’s calendar, volunteer coordination and liaisons to City Council meetings.
The council moved on to routine business after the officer election; no additional officer votes were taken at the meeting.
