Supervisors approve special permit for 255-foot Vertical Bridge/Verizon tower near Young Road

The Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors voted May 5 to approve a special permit allowing Vertical Bridge, with Verizon Wireless as a tenant, to construct a 255-foot self-supporting lattice communications tower at 5302 Young Road, about 3,300 feet east of the Young Road and Gilbert Road intersection.
Planning staff Joseph Gman described the permit request, noted the planning and zoning commission’s unanimous recommendation for approval, and explained the county’s zoning emphasis on collocation to limit the number of towers. Gman said the nearest tower is over a mile away and too short to fill the coverage gap identified by the applicant.
Nathan Ward of the Grenell Group, representing Vertical Bridge and Verizon, told the board the project remains contingent on required federal clearances from the Federal Communications Commission; he estimated the FCC review and clearance process would take about two months and, if all approvals are obtained, construction could begin this fall.
The board moved and approved the resolution by roll call. When the chair called each supervisor’s name, members answered in the affirmative and the resolution carried. The planning staff said no public opposition spoke at the meeting.
The action authorizes the applicant to proceed with local approvals; federal approvals (FCC) and any required state or federal environmental or aviation reviews remain prerequisites to construction.
