Needham advances Ridge Hill signage and map; commission asks for sturdier panels and clearer trail labeling

The Conservation Commission reviewed two Ridge Hill‑related items May 7: a vendor quote for trail signage and a draft Ridge Hill map from the town GIS manager. Staff said the vendor estimate for 63 signs (52 directional and 11 trailhead panels) came in at about $1,575 for the quoted materials and printing; commissioners favored specifying a heavier 6 mm aluminum sandwich panel to resist vandalism and asked staff to request an updated quote and revise the purchase order if needed.

GIS manager Ben supplied a draft map that includes topographic lines, wetlands, proposed sign locations and QR codes for a phone‑displayable version. Commissioners requested several design changes: (1) clearer depiction of boardwalk sections through wetlands, (2) removal or de‑emphasis of an Eversource transmission easement so it does not read as a maintained trail, (3) dashed connector lines for minor paths to reduce visual clutter, and (4) mileage/loop lengths or a small legend showing typical loop distances for common routes. Staff will ask Ben for map revisions and confirm whether the Eversource easement should be displayed as a utility corridor rather than a trail.

Commissioners also discussed the recently approved purchase of a neighboring parcel (reported from town meeting) that may affect future trail connections and the potential to add educational panels and a bench if a Charles River access loop is formalized. Town staff and the GIS manager will return with a revised map and an updated sign quote for final approval.
