Ferndale outlines water, sewer and $40 million lead-service-line replacement program

Mayor Rayon Le used the State of the City address to summarize major public-works projects under way in Ferndale.
The mayor said the Department of Public Works plans a water-main replacement on Woodward Heights in Jarvis and a 2026 sewer improvement program that will use pipelining techniques to reinforce aging pipes identified in a 2023 camera inspection.
Le also highlighted the city’s lead service line replacement program. “So far, around 2,350 lead pipes have been replaced and another 150 are planned for this year,” she said. The mayor characterized the overall effort as a $40 million project scheduled to run through 2037.
City staff credited a Relief Michigan grant to support urban-tree planting tied to public-works and stormwater goals, and said crews are continuing to update service-line records as replacements proceed.
Residents with concerns about specific streets or service lines were directed to contact DPW for schedules and inspection details; the mayor said DPW will continue to prioritize replacements where camera inspections and field work identify deterioration.
