Commission hears update: city advancing sustainable energy utility, FY2027 budget to include start-up funds

At its May 18 meeting, the Ann Arbor Sustainability Commission heard a staff and council update that the City Council held a first reading of an ordinance to create a sustainable energy utility.
Council member Malik said the ordinance would set initial rates and customers for the utility and that the earliest customers would include residents in the Bryant neighborhood (where neighborhood decarbonization pilots are planned) and municipal solar arrays transitioning into the utility. He said the FY2027 budget proposal includes roughly $4.5 million to help start the utility.
Malik told commissioners the ordinance was scheduled for a second reading at the upcoming council meeting and the budget would be considered at the same meeting; he urged commissioners to follow council actions for final adoption. The commission did not take formal action on the ordinance; staff said they would pass along additional council outcomes as they are finalized.
