District outlines portable‑classroom modernization and use for child care and instruction

Assistant Superintendent Keith Pharaoh presented a districtwide assessment of portable buildings at the board’s May 12 meeting, describing their current uses, maintenance approach and planned upgrades.
Pharaoh said portables are located at every active school and serve a range of uses: classrooms, libraries, child care and multipurpose spaces. He reported more than 41 portables have been modernized or are scheduled for modernization; three Star View portables will receive roof, HVAC and interior upgrades this summer to support an expanding child‑care program.
On maintenance, Pharaoh said staff perform annual site visits and prioritize repairs; recent work has included siding replacement and HVAC repairs. He acknowledged an inventory of units that require parts or full replacement and said longer‑term projects are scheduled as staff identify units beyond reasonable repair.
Board members asked whether maintenance tasks are handled in‑house and how often units are inspected. Pharaoh said routine checks are performed yearly, many repairs are handled by district crews, and larger projects are brought to the board as capital needs.
The board noted portables can provide rapid, cost‑effective space compared with full facilities projects, but trustees asked staff to continue monitoring lifespan, safety and implications for long‑term property planning. No contract award or demolition decision was made at the meeting.
