City describes heat-mitigation plan and announces September extreme heat summit

Palm Springs staff briefed the Sustainability Commission on progress with a comprehensive shade and heat mitigation plan and announced an Extreme Heat Summit scheduled for Sept. 18.
Staff said the city received grant funding administered through CALR and selected a consultant team led by AECOM with partners Environmental Science Associates (ESA) and Climate Resolve to develop the mitigation plan. The team is completing a literature review, sending data requests and developing community engagement approaches with a focus on vulnerable communities, staff said.
The plan will link to adjacent projects including a greenhouse gas inventory update and the Convention Center modernization. Staff invited interested commissioners and members of the public to sign up via a QR code or to email sustainability@palmspringsca.gov for more information and to participate in summit planning.
The summit is intended to convene local governments, emergency managers and community groups to develop strategies for shade, cooling and heat mitigation. Staff emphasized the city’s intention to integrate heat mitigation with pedestrian and greenhouse-gas planning work and to prioritize outreach to vulnerable neighborhoods.
