Lewiston proclaims National Public Works Week; Boys & Girls Club reports program participation and meals served

The Lewiston City Council recognized National Public Works Week at its May 11 meeting. Mayor Daniel T. Johnson read an official proclamation calling attention to the role of public-works personnel and activities in maintaining community health and safety.

Public Works Director Dustin Johnson told the council the department will host a Public Works Expo on May 21 at the county fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., aimed at school-age children; planned activities include equipment demonstrations, a GIS table, locate-station demonstrations and other hands-on exhibits.

John Evans, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs at the Lewis-Clark Valley, presented the club's annual accounting under the city's FY2026 services agreement. Evans reported participation counts for Lewiston residents this year including 272 flag-football participants, 311 fall-soccer participants, 309 basketball participants, 549 spring-soccer participants and 265 in cheer/dance/children's theater and holiday events. He also said the club served 67,284 grilled-cheese sandwiches, more than 32,000 summer lunches, and 31,839 breakfasts, and that the city's $18,000 contract equates to roughly $1,055 per member per year for services restricted to Lewiston residents.

Why it matters: the proclamation and expo promote public-works engagement and STEM-related outreach for schoolchildren. The Boys & Girls Club figures provide measurable outputs tied to the city's contract and show scale of program services for Lewiston youth.

The council thanked the presenters; no formal action was required aside from the proclamation and acceptance of the accounting presentation.
