Rural Retreat student asks Wythe County to install farm machinery crossing signs

Olivia Crigger, a junior at Rural Retreat High School, asked the Wythe County Board of Supervisors on March 10 to support placement of farm machinery crossing signage on roads she identified as high risk after a local farmer died in a roadway accident.
Crigger said the proposal began as her Girl Scout Gold Award project and expanded into a Farm Bureau–Farm Safety initiative to increase awareness and reduce collisions between farm equipment and other vehicles. She identified Peppers Ferry Road, Black Lick Road and Old Stage Road as roads where signage would be beneficial and asked for the Board’s support in placing reminders for drivers to share the road with slow-moving farm equipment.
VDOT Resident Engineer Mr. Schwartz told the Board that Crigger had submitted formal sign requests; he has forwarded them to the traffic engineering division for review and will keep Crigger and county staff updated on recommendations.
Chair James D. “Jamie” Smith thanked Crigger for her work and encouraged the Board’s support for the project.
The Board did not take formal action on the signage requests at the meeting; the next step is a technical review by VDOT’s traffic engineering division and subsequent staff coordination with the Board.
