The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors voted May 11 to ask the county attorney to draft a resolution creating a restricted donations account for the Public Health Department.
"They voted to request that the supervisors direct the auditor to set up a restricted account for donations," said Lisa during the meeting, describing action the Board of Health took at its recent meeting. Lisa said the account would hold donations for special projects at the discretion of the public-health director, and one member asked that accounting reference 'public health department 23' and allow the account to earn interest.
County staff said the new fund would protect public-health autonomy and prevent donors' gifts from being swept into the general fund. County staff also clarified a spending constraint: money placed into a restricted fund cannot be spent until the board adopts a budget amendment. "You couldn't spend it this fiscal year because we didn't make it in the budget amendment," staff noted.
Supervisors voted to have the county attorney prepare the resolution; the board will consider the final language when it returns the item for formal approval. The motion passed unanimously.
Next steps: the county attorney will prepare a draft resolution for the board to review at the next meeting, and the auditor will work with public-health staff to identify accounting codes and any interest-bearing account mechanics.
