Banning Mills named industrial archaeological district; commissioners hear history from property stewards

Carroll County commissioners heard a presentation from Donna and Mike Holder about the history and recent historic designation of Banning Mills. The Holders said they purchased acreage there in 1998, assembled roughly 350 acres, and recently received recognition as an industrial archaeological district on the National Register of Historic Places; they also noted two Guinness World Records tied to the property.
The Holders described the site's industrial history (multiple mills, early paper production from pine pulp and early electric generation) and noted uses today that combine preservation with recreation, including zip lines, trails and other amenities. The Holders said the nonprofit status (501(c)(3)) supports preservation efforts and future grant-seeking to stabilize and restore remaining mill structures.
Chairman Morgan and other commissioners congratulated the Holders and applauded the preservation and community-value aspects of the site.
