City presents FY2026 Q2 work-plan with dozens of projects including airport and hotel developments

Yolanda Lator, interim director of the enterprise project management office, reviewed highlights across six strategic pillars including economic development, infrastructure, public safety and quality of life.
Notable items cited in the presentation included the opening of an Amazon delivery station in Brownsville, the Flight Academy of South Texas launch, the largest Barnes & Noble in the Rio Grande Valley, start of Embassy Suites construction, air service expansion with year-round Breeze Airways flights to Orlando, and several road projects (Coffee Road phase one, Old Highway 77, Wild Rose Lane) at various stages of completion. Staff also reported completion of 24 alleys (about 16,125 linear feet), multiple mill-and-overlay street projects, the landfill cell five improvements, and implementation of a curbside recycling pilot.
Public safety projects noted included near-complete public-safety complex construction documents and deployment of a new Axon system to streamline report writing. Quality-of-life investments included Musco lighting for recreation funded by a $700,000 BCIC grant and awarded splash-pad contracts for neighborhood parks. Staff answered commissioner questions about scheduling and contract milestones and said the Canary project expects substantial completion in September.
Commissioners thanked staff and approved the consent items that followed. Staff emphasized these work-plan items form the city's capital and strategic priorities and represent ongoing and multi-year efforts.
