The Middleton Sustainability Committee approved several small operating-budget actions and discussed outreach and education plans for the coming months.
Budget votes: The committee approved an allocation not to exceed $300 to subsidize staff and alder attendance at an Oct. 9 United States Green Building Council event in Sun Prairie. Alder Schaefer moved the ticket subsidy ($25 per ticket with a 20% discount available to members); the motion carried by voice vote. Separately, after discussion about stipend amounts for upcoming Sustainable U speakers, the committee approved allocating up to $400 for speaker stipends through the end of the year.
Outreach and procurement: Members discussed purchasing sustainably sourced committee T-shirts (vendor quote provided) but voted to postpone the T-shirt purchase until members could confirm sourcing and sustainability details. The committee also confirmed a utility flyer had been sent to the printer and discussed parade outreach and potential distribution strategies for outreach materials.
Green Team and composting: Green Team lead Brad reported stronger youth engagement this year with 104 registrants and said the team will focus on lunchroom staff education about compostable materials. Brad said Green Team plans to contract with Green Box for industrial compost pickup and that Green Team fundraising will help cover initial costs.
Sustainable U attendance: Members noted low attendance for some Sustainable U lectures and discussed outreach options including paid social-media boosts, inclusion in Parks & Recreation guides, hybrid or recorded sessions to broaden reach, and outreach to schools (advisory-period presentations) to engage younger audiences.
Next steps: Staff and volunteers will gather supplier sustainability information for the T-shirt decision, finalize ticket subsidies and stipends, and pursue outreach channels (social media, Park & Rec, school partnerships) to increase participation in Sustainable U events.
