The request covers a professional building-condition assessment by a preservation architect, a digital public engagement survey and town-hall meetings and a final report laying out options and scope. Committee members said the $100,000 figure is an upper limit and that the work may cost less once proposals are received.
Committee members debated whether to defer the request to the June meeting to allow more time for review. Commissioner Jones moved to defer for a month so members could “digest” the packet; other members said delaying could push the county past grant application windows. The committee ultimately voted to forward the request to budget rather than postpone it.
Commissioner Klein, who emphasized the complexity of older structures, urged hiring an experienced preservation architect if original plans cannot be located. “It’s best to get an architect who’s seasoned in this kind of stuff in historic building construction,” Commissioner Klein said, adding that earlier-era construction methods can hide important features and complicate restoration.
Committee members also discussed efforts to locate original as-built plans through state and federal archives. Presenters said preliminary archival searches had turned up photographs but not full plans; further requests to federal archives were pending. Several members asked that the budget packet be distributed to the committee prior to the full commission meeting.
The committee will forward the request to the county budget office, which will review the appropriation alongside other requests. The committee chair said members will receive copies of the proposal and supporting documents before the full commission takes action.
