Utah County funds microtransit pilot and a $79 million Provo airport expansion to ease commuting

Utah County is investing in new transit approaches and airport infrastructure to address commuting and connectivity challenges, Administrator Ezra Ner said in an interview.
Ner described a county-funded microtransit pilot run through the transit authority UTA as “kind of like Uber for transit,” intended to solve the first/last-mile problem and provide data that would support a push to extend light rail into Utah County. “It’ll connect you to trains or buses to get you to your destination, but then also solve that first last mile problem,” he said.
The county has also directed significant funds to airport improvements. “The county has invested $79 million into expanding that airport,” Ner said, referring to Provo Airport’s upgraded role as a secondary hub to Salt Lake International Airport to increase service options.
Ner framed the county’s transportation investments as long-term: hosting large events such as the 2034 Olympics is being used as a catalyst to secure multi-county infrastructure upgrades rather than one-time spending. “We’re using the Olympics as a catalyst to continue to grow our transit system for long-term impact,” he said.
Why it matters: congestion on the I‑15 corridor and constrained transit connections were cited as major local concerns. The microtransit pilot, airport investment and data collection are intended to demonstrate demand and leverage state resources for rail extension and other capital projects.
