Police report: 164 calls, 52 charges during IUP Patties weekend; two reports of gunfire

Indiana Borough's police chief presented an operational summary of public-safety activity for the March 20'22 IUP Patties weekend, describing a heavy, multiagency response to large gatherings.
The chief reported 164 calls for service during that period (compared with 168 for the same weekend in 2025) and said the department filed 52 offenses, up from 36 the previous year. Arrests included individuals wanted on fugitive-of-justice warrants, firearms offenses and driving-under-the-influence cases. The chief also reported two separate reports of gunfire, several fights and multiple physical-assault investigations.
Officers worked with partner agencies including Pennsylvania State Police, Indiana County Sheriff's Office, Indiana Regional Medical Center and campus police; the chief credited coordinated planning and support from community partners for preventing a worse outcome. The chief noted overtime and special-enforcement-detail costs, some of which were grant-funded under traffic-safety programs.
The chief told council that large private gatherings associated with Greek life and campus-adjacent properties generated the largest crowds and the most concentrated enforcement needs, with gatherings on Rice Avenue and Philadelphia Street requiring significant resources to disperse and reopen roadways.
Council members thanked officers and partners and noted the importance of continued advance planning for future large events.
