Steven Boria, superintendent of the School City of East Chicago, recorded a message urging students, families and teachers to participate in Read Across America Week, a national literacy celebration held around the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
Boria said the week is a reminder that books can “open doors, spark imagination, and shape our future,” and highlighted reading’s benefits, including stronger vocabulary, improved focus, empathy and creativity. He described school activities such as guest readers, themed dress-up days and book drives as ways communities can make reading engaging for children.
The superintendent framed literacy as foundational to opportunity, saying strong reading skills support success across subjects and open pathways to careers and informed citizenship. He encouraged daily reading habits and called the week an intentional effort to promote lifelong literacy.
