Darien board delays submission of Middlesex Middle School education specs; consent agenda approved unanimously

At the April 8 special meeting, the Darien Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the consent agenda, and heard an update on next steps for facilities work related to Middlesex Middle School.
Board member Joanna moved to approve the consent agenda and Sarah seconded; the motion passed unanimously. The consent packet included minutes from March meetings, a 2025–26 calendar amendment for a May 15 high‑school schedule change, a district repair and improvement project (DRIP) grant disbursement and a personnel report.
On facilities, Superintendent Dr. Burn said staff will debrief with design firm KG&D and the internal facilities team to address board questions about scope and data needs. She said requested additional data (arrival/departure patterns, parking, field usage and traffic impacts) must be mapped into the educational specifications (EDS) and that the district now expects to aim for an EDS submission in June 2027 rather than June 2026 to ensure the specifications reflect the board’s priorities.
"The target is not this June of 2026 but the target would be to complete the necessary process ... with the possible intention of submitting for June of 2027," Dr. Burn said. Staff noted that schematic design and higher‑cost design work typically follow once a building committee is formed and that targeted studies (for example, traffic studies) are generally commissioned later by the building committee as EDS language triggers them.
Board members asked whether funds exist to commission traffic or field‑usage studies. Staff responded that the EDS should specify the questions (e.g., number of fields needed, arrival/departure modeling, parking needs), which then allows the building committee to commission those studies; staff also said they are meeting with town officials to explore potential town‑owned land adjacent to the middle school site.
No formal vote was taken on capital scope or study contracts at the April 8 meeting; board direction focused on gathering additional data, refining the EDS and returning to the facilities committee with recommendations.
