District staff outline no‑cost American Lung Association/Sanofi air‑quality pilot for one school

Rob, leading environmental services updates at the April 8 meeting of the East Stroudsburg Area SD Properties and Facilities Committee, described a pilot partnership with the American Lung Association (ALA) and pharmaceutical company Sanofi aimed at data‑driven indoor air‑quality improvements.

Rob told the committee the program is zero cost to the district and would not require any district financial contribution. ‘‘It’s zero cost to the district. The project requires no financial commitment whatsoever,’’ he said. The initiative includes a Smart Services Pilot that provides at least $65,000 for physical improvements at one school (for items such as reflective window coverings, shade structures or HEPA filtration) and a Clean Air School Challenge providing up to $95,000 in ALA mini‑grants for planning and implementation.

Staff said the work would use data such as air‑exchange metrics to shape interventions and that much of the initial evaluation would occur with district staff and ALA support starting in late spring. Rob said May 1 is when he would begin evaluations and that a more intensive on‑site assessment would start around July 1 if the board agrees to participate. The ALA would provide media support and signage, subject to district approval.

Rob also said staff will work to minimize travel costs by relying on remote guidance where possible; any vendor work would be coordinated through the program. The committee expressed appreciation for staff outreach and asked only clarifying questions about timing and implementation during the summer.

Next steps: staff will continue evaluations starting in May and, if the board approves participation, will coordinate the pilot’s site assessment, plan implementation and permitting or vendor selection as needed.
