Facilities update: LED walkthrough, solar incentives and water concerns flagged; facilities director search ongoing

Committee members received an update from the facilities working group on energy and infrastructure work and on staffing.

The group reported preliminary analysis from Northern Energy outlining solar incentives and rough payback estimates by building square footage, and scheduled a site walkthrough with an electrician to collect detailed costs and feasibility for LED upgrades across five district buildings. Members noted that state reimbursement rules limit MSBA participation in some items — for example, MSBA will not fully reimburse expanded auditorium sizes and typically does not cover additional roof-structural costs or conduit increases required for solar installations — so the district will pursue rebates and grant dollars (including National Grid incentives and town Green Communities programs) concurrently to reduce net cost.

The search for a facilities director is active; the committee heard that interviews have taken place and that, if hiring proceeds, the position could be filled in early August. The subcommittee also discussed water-quality issues at Millville, including lead-treatment and testing logistics, and examined options for connecting the school to a nearby public water system; members noted DEP conversations and the political and assessment costs towns may face if extending water or sewer lines.

Committee action items included reaching out to alternative demographers (one firm said it cannot take new work until late August/early September), collecting electrician walkthrough estimates next week, and continuing to pursue layered funding for energy projects so MSBA reimbursement rules do not preclude ancillary funding sources.
