Board approves routine reports, claims and license renewals; officials announce bridge closure, tornado damage to Preston shop and WMA director departure

At the April 7 Jackson County Board meeting, supervisors handled routine administrative business and heard multiple community updates.
Jennifer Jones of the coroner’s office presented the March report and the recorder’s (reporter) fees collected for March, which the auditor recorded as $43,422.52. The board moved to accept and place the report on file and authorized chair and auditor signatures.
Auditor Lisa (Auditor Smith) asked the board to approve minutes from the March 31, 2026 meeting and to authorize issuance of warrants and the publication of the claims listing in the amount of $400,847.23. The board approved both motions after staff highlighted major line items (rock purchases, salt, vehicle purchase, and insurance).
The board also approved renewal of a Class C retail alcohol license for Parker’s Pit Stop LLC (29418 Highway 52, Belleview) for April 4, 2026–April 3, 2027, and accepted the resignation of Lori Barren from the Jackson County Historic Preservation Commission effective March 31, 2026.
Engineer Jaden Shekele announced that the bridge on 362nd Avenue (Z15 / Spring Brook Highway) will close starting the day after the meeting for a replacement project expected to last about four months; detour signage was to be posted. Shekele also reported tornado damage to the Preston shop — a storage shed used for equipment — and said the roof, tin and some rafters were gone and the structure may be a total loss; staff will coordinate with insurance and contractors.
Chair Don Smiker said Aaron Ericson, director of the Makoka River Water Management Authority (WMA), accepted a position as watershed manager for the city of Cedar Rapids and will depart; the WMA will seek a replacement in the coming month. Smiker also reported work at the county transfer station is nearing completion and thanked residents for their patience.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn; supervisors approved the motion.
