At a city strategic planning workshop, participants endorsed creating a formal succession plan and improving volunteer recruitment to protect city operations and sustain community events. The moderator said she had drafted a succession plan and invited comments; participants said the city has never had formal succession planning and urged the plan be adopted and regularly reviewed.
Brian, speaking in support, said, "That's something in my 10 years here, we've never had any succession planning," and called the proposal "big for the city going forward." Speakers recommended an annual employee satisfaction survey with consistent questions to measure progress and guide organizational development.
On volunteer recruitment, attendees described chronic shortages for major events such as the Fourth of July parade and suggested a centralized online portal linking residents to volunteer opportunities and partner organizations. One participant recommended outreach to churches and community groups to recruit volunteers and to adopt a visible "volunteer pathways" page that lists organizations and tasks for newcomers.
The group proposed adding a six-month review of the plan on council agendas so progress is tracked rather than letting the document sit idle. The workshop organizers said they will compile the input and bring a revised draft to the City Council in June or July, with the next budget meeting scheduled for June 9.
