Fletcher council debates auction-house venue versus park for August concert; officials discuss building amphitheater

Josh Queen, Fletcher’s parks and recreation director, asked the council to decide whether the summer concert on Aug. 16 should return to the Auction House or be held in the town park.
Queen said the Auction House provided shade, seating and food access and that the first concert there (June 7) drew a heavy, enthusiastic crowd, but he also acknowledged residents’ requests to host at the park. “The park… it’s just not a great space for a concert. It’s August. It’s hot,” he told council members, noting there is no permanent covered seating at the park.
Why it matters: Council members said hosting at the park supports broad public access and town identity, while the Auction House offers easier logistics for staff and better shade and amenities. They discussed alternating venues, continuing shuttle service to address parking, and improving outreach to encourage use of shuttle parking.
Council discussed budgeting for a permanent amphitheater or pavilion in the park as part of the town’s capital improvement plan. The town manager said $2.6 million in ARPO funds is available for capital projects and that the town currently sets aside revenue from a 6-cent CIP levy; council members suggested exploring whether CIP reserve or annual allocations could fund a multi-use platform or amphitheater. The manager cautioned that much of the park sits in a floodplain, which would complicate adding permanent structures.
Several council members signaled they favored either alternating venues or rotating a summer concert back to the park once logistics and shade needs are addressed. Council asked staff to include concept options and ballpark cost estimates during upcoming CIP discussions so the body can consider the idea during the next five-year CIP cycle.
The council agreed to continue shuttle service and to consider a first concert at the park and later events at the Auction House, while staff return with cost options and CIP placement.
