Henrico highlights music honors, teacher-scholars program and graduation schedule

Henrico County Public Schools received recognition for sustained excellence in music education and the board used its monthly meeting to highlight teacher recruitment and upcoming graduations.

Doctor Leslie Hughes, HCPS chief learning officer, told the board that the division is one of only two in the nation to receive the NAMM 'Best Community for Music Education' recognition every year since the award’s inception. The board and staff credited music educators and leaders including Chris Mosley and Erin Franklin for the district’s achievements.

The meeting featured performances and recognitions: Fairfield Middle School’s show choir, under director Zachary Fortune, was introduced by Christopher Mosley; the board acknowledged the choir’s competition successes.

Kenya Jackson, talent acquisition ambassador, presented the Teacher Scholars program, which selects high school students for contingent employment offers upon completion of an accredited college teaching program and a three-year return commitment; this year 12 students were named as recipients and a one-time hiring bonus was described. Several recipients and their home schools were named during the presentation.

The board also recognized Jordan Satterfield as Henrico’s 2026 Teacher of the Year through a classroom presentation. Board member Shea noted that Satterfield was named a quarterfinalist for a national Grammy educator recognition.

Graduation schedules were announced: ceremonies at the Henrico Sports and Event Center are set between May 27 and May 29, with earlier ceremonies for the Academy of Virginia Randolph and Henrico Virtual Academy; livestreams will be available for those without tickets.
