Design team updates site plan, program layouts; community presentation set for Feb. 25
Summary
DRA presented site survey findings, wetlands setbacks and evolving building footprint to avoid riverfront impacts and reviewed interior program layouts (kitchen, guidance, culinary, tech-ed, science and auditorium). The committee and engagement team scheduled a public presentation for Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. at the high school, to be livestreamed.
The DRA design team briefed the Blackstone-Millville school building committee Feb. 11 on site survey results, wetlands constraints and evolving design layouts as schematic design begins.
Designers showed mapped 100‑ and 200‑foot riverfront setbacks and explained that parts of the existing school and parking sit within regulated buffers. The team reported the footprint will be refined in schematic design to reduce impervious area and avoid additional riverfront impacts where possible. "The building is liable to get pinched and prodded and pushed around a little bit and the footprint will evolve," a designer said when presenting the site overlays.
The presentation covered program-level changes requested by staff: modest kitchen equipment relocations, a larger guidance/waiting area achieved by reconfiguring adjacent corridors, culinary utilities adjustments and planning for auditorium acoustics and sightlines. Designers described work to improve circulation and egress, address loading dock constraints relative to existing grade, and place classroom furniture and utilities to meet ADA and safety requirements.
Designers noted surveys have been slowed by winter weather and said they will meet with local conservation and regulatory boards as layout decisions progress. The team also emphasized continuing coordination with administration and staff — including SRO and custodial teams — to resolve access and waste-management details.
A community engagement team member said outreach includes updated website materials, a superintendent newsletter, social media and targeted flyers; a community presentation is scheduled Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. at the high school and will be livestreamed. The team encouraged residents to attend.
The committee will review further schematic design refinements in March and asked the design team to provide updated drawings and a summary of any outstanding permitting issues ahead of the MSBA schematic submission.
