Pitkin County accepts $9.64 million FAA grant for runway design work at Sardy Field

Dan Bartholomew, consulting for the airport, said the funds are part of the airport’s entitlement bank created from COVID-era funding and have a use-or-lose timeline; engineers expect the FAA to cover a large portion of design costs through this and a subsequent grant, with the remaining match split between the state department of transportation and the airport sponsor.
Bartholomew noted the grant must be executed by April 17 to meet FAA deadlines; the board authorized the chair to sign the grant package.
The board approved the resolution at second reading and directed staff to execute the grant to secure design funding.
