Pitkin County renews BLM lease for Crown Mountain telecommunications site to safeguard first-responder comms

Pitkin County approved a second-reading ordinance renewing its communications lease with the Bureau of Land Management for the Crown Mountain telecommunications site, a location the county has operated since 1999.
Drew Peterson, who presented the confirmatory reading, said the site supports first-responder radios for fire departments and law enforcement, microwave and fixed wireless services, wildfire-detection cameras (Pano AI partnership), and an upcoming Verizon installation planned for the summer. Peterson described the county’s periodic vegetation management and partnership with local fire agencies to maintain defensible space around towers.
"Drew Peterson: We also in the last five or so years have worked with a company and with the local fire departments. The company is called Pano AI and they use AI to analyze the horizon for smoke," Peterson said in describing the wildfire-detection partnership.
The board voted to adopt the ordinance authorizing the county to enter into the communications use lease with the Bureau of Land Management.
