District staff explained the mechanics: revolving accounts are used to aggregate activity fee revenue and must be spent in line with those activities; the proposed budget had projected fee revenue to offset certain line items. Officials described projected fee revenue of roughly $139,916 targeted to offset student-activity expenses and an additional projected $161,000 intended to offset high-school and middle-school coaching benefits. Committee members and staff emphasized that the appropriation replaces that projected fee revenue so expenditures remain the same while the source of revenue shifts to town funds for this year.
Members described the decision as a one-year remedy intended to avoid charging families while acknowledging the district’s challenging fiscal reality and that the committee may revisit fees in future budget cycles. One member recommended continued stakeholder engagement and encouraged the public to attend budget hearings.
The committee recorded a roll-call vote in favor of reapproving the FY27 operating budget and adopting the direction not to collect the fees; the motion passed 5–0.
