ABC Unified spotlights student achievements: Whitman pledges, math team, Ross percussion and migrant ed financial literacy

The ABC Unified School District opened its May 20 meeting with a series of student recognitions and presentations that trustees and the superintendent described as examples of the district’s extracurricular and instructional strengths.
Students from Whitman Elementary led the Pledge of Allegiance and the district peace pledge and described recent classroom highlights such as Susical Jr., robotics and a student-created cookbook. Whitman’s fourth-grade math team was recognized for winning the county fourth-grade competition; the principal and team coach described practice routines and the county event that led to the first-place finish.
Ross Middle School’s indoor percussion ensemble received a board commendation after winning the 2025 scholastic junior high championship; band director David Lopez thanked parents, instructors and Prop 28 funding for enabling the program. Trustees praised the growth of the music program and encouraged continued district support.
At Nemimus (migrant education) Elementary, sixth-grade students presented a financial literacy program led by Mrs. Baky. The students described budgeting, investing and the classroom competition known as the Capitol Hill Challenge, sponsored by the Charles Schwab Foundation. Student teams reported strong returns and statewide placement in the competition; board members praised the program’s role in college and career readiness.
Trustees used the recognition segment to underscore the district’s commitment to arts, STEM and financial literacy, and to encourage replication of successful programs across elementary and middle schools where feasible.
