Board approves Amira K–2 reading screener for 2025–26, teachers to receive training

The ABC Unified School District board voted May 20 to adopt the Amira assessment as its districtwide K–2 screener to identify students at risk for reading difficulties, consistent with state law requiring early identification and intervention.
Dr. Castro introduced the one-year contract and said a committee of teachers and curriculum staff selected Amira for its bilingual support (English and Spanish), availability in paper format for kindergarten students, and data reporting features teachers found useful. Trustees asked about frequency of screening and progress monitoring; district staff said the screener will be administered three times per year with progress-monitoring between administrations and that the one-year contract includes training for staff.
Board members requested early availability of school-level results so site leaders and the board can track the impact of interventions. The contract was approved unanimously; staff said they will report back to the board with administration plans and timelines for the 2025–26 school year.
