The Hoover City Schools board approved a package of business items on motion and voice votes and took a separate, close vote to adopt board compensation under a new state law.
On routine business the board approved the consent agenda (personnel actions, contracts and field trips) and then approved procurement recommendations: awarding the CNP cafeteria serving‑line at Bumpus Middle School to Singer H & R for $223,943 and the Bluff Park serving‑line bid to Singer H & R for $158,393. The board also approved awarding the middle‑school concession and vending contract to Coca Cola Bottling Company as the sole bidder.
A district finance presenter reviewed the FY26 budget amendment. Staff reported an actual ending fund balance for FY25 of $161,600,000 (about $2.3 million higher than the estimate used in the prior budget), $409,518 in unspent federal carryover funds being incorporated, and $1.8 million in newly awarded budgeted funds for targeted student programs. The amendment uses approximately $2.5 million in reserves to fund about $11.1 million in planned capital projects and projects an ending fund balance for 09/30/2026 of $155,965,999 (about eight months of operating reserve). The board approved the amendment by voice vote.
The FY27 capital plan was presented with no substantive changes from the introduction last month; trustees asked clarifying questions (for example, scope and cost lines for tennis/track resurfacing and soccer field upgrades) and staff committed to follow up. The board approved the capital plan on motion.
Human resources and finance staff presented the 2026–27 salary schedule, which incorporated a legislated 2% increase for employees plus targeted rate increases for substitutes and certain classifications and a new psychometrist position; the board approved the schedule by voice vote.
On governance, board attorney Mark Boardman urged the board to adopt a compensation level under Act 2024‑331, telling trustees it is “good public policy” to set compensation so people who cannot donate time are not excluded from service. The board adopted a motion to pay board members $500 per month; the roll call recorded a 3–2 result in favor.
Finally, the board conducted its annual election of officers by roll call and elected Alan Paquette as president and Rex Blair as vice president. The superintendent closed with remarks praising the school year; the board adjourned and scheduled its next regular meeting for June 9, 2026 at 5:30 p.m.
