Board approves $ change order to remove clay and add base rock under high school track

The board approved a construction change order to increase subgrade work at Orisa/Orsta High School’s track on May 11 after staff presented soils findings and long-term durability concerns.
Maintenance Director Matt Vargas told trustees that trucked-in clay under the stadium is expansive and would risk future cracking of the asphalt and track surface. He recommended removing an additional 8 inches of clay and placing 8 inches of compacted AB base rock (12 inches total) rather than performing a lime treatment. Vargas and district consultants concluded the removal and replacement would provide greater longevity for the track surface.
Vargas explained the tradeoffs: lime stabilization would take longer and cost more with uncertain long-term performance, while the removal-and-replace approach improves compaction and drainage and aligns with manufacturer warranties for the rubberized top layer. Trustees asked whether the change order would delay graduation or the project schedule; Vargas said it would not delay graduation and that the lime option would have caused longer delays.
The board approved the change order by roll call. The administrative recommendation and supporting soils information will inform the project’s contracting and construction schedule.
