Alameda recognized for climate leadership with ILG Beacon awards

The City of Alameda received multiple Beacon awards from the Institute for Local Government on Nov. 18 in recognition of the city’s climate‑action work and interagency adaptation efforts.
Nikita Sinhham, program manager with the Institute for Local Government, presented two spotlight awards — a platinum-level honor for community greenhouse‑gas reductions and a silver-level award for sustainability best practices — and the 2025 cross‑agency collaboration award recognizing the Oakland–Alameda Adaptation Committee’s collaborative approach to sea‑level rise and resilience planning.
“After receiving awards in these spotlight categories, agencies that complete all five categories receive the Beacon Vanguard award,” Nikita Sinhham said while outlining the program and the Beacon framework. The ILG presentation cited Alameda’s work on greenhouse‑gas reduction, energy efficiency, sustainability best practices and cross‑agency collaboration involving the Port of Oakland, East Bay Regional Park District and other partners.
Mayor Ezie Ashcraft thanked ILG and city staff, including Sustainability and Resilience Manager Danielle Meller, for their work to reduce emissions and plan for climate impacts; several council members, Assistant City Manager Amy Waldridge and staff attended the League of California Cities conference where the city accepted a plaque.
The awards highlight Alameda’s progress on greenhouse‑gas reporting and interagency adaptation planning; ILG representatives encouraged continued community engagement as the city implements resilience measures.
