Alexander County board honors students for FCCLA, SkillsUSA and Governor’s School selections

The Alexander County Board of Education spent a substantial portion of its meeting recognizing student achievements in career and technical education and academically selective programs.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Alicia Clure announced state-level awards from the FCCLA and SkillsUSA competitions in Greensboro and thanked advisors by name for sponsoring and preparing students. She named placing students in FCCLA events and SkillsUSA trades, including Samuel Fuellan (carpentry, second place), Elijah Anderson (electrical wiring, second place), Elijah Harrington (electrical wiring, third place), Coley Whitner (firefighting, third place) and Banks Lever (motorcycle service technology, second place). "Always makes us proud to show all the wonderful things we have going on," Dr. Clure said as the board recognized students and posed for photos.
The board also recognized Dakota Rawlings, a fire academy student, for reacting to a garage fire by directing his mother to call 911 and alerting occupants so they could escape safely before the fire department arrived. Board members praised Dakota’s use of training and said they had secured a grant to support the program.
Dr. Clure announced three Alexander County students selected for the North Carolina Governor’s School after a rigorous statewide process: Raiken Dagenheart and Jason Deng (Meredith College, math; Jason Deng was not present) and Elizabeth Romeriz (Greensboro College, Spanish). Dr. Clure noted these students were chosen from about 1,800 statewide applicants.
Board members used the moment to commend CTE programs and staff, thanked families for support, and linked recent grant activity (including a Golden Leaf grant) to instructional improvements the board says helped highlight the district during recent visits by state education officials.
The recognitions concluded with board appreciation for teachers and students as the district moves toward end-of-year events.
